the "MISTREATED" album; 'MISTREATED Ski Racing' ....(aka "SIROCCO IV") ...(aka "CLEVELAND EXPRESS")
Here's another ripper from Garry's repertoire of magic boats. Beast is/was a Skicraft Interceptor II running a stinking hot 302 Cleveland feeding from 4x dual-throat downdraught Webers. Originally purchased from A.R. Marine in Vic., where she was raced by A.Revelle in the 5.2ltr class before he stepped up to the unlimited's (possibly the other A.R. Interceptor we seen in a random post previously?) Garry hauled her home across the Nullarbor to W.A. where the 'Mistreated' team raced her throughout the 80's. ...Too cool!

ReplyDeleteI can't be positive but I think I owned this boat till a couple of years ago. If I'm right, it's now called "Clevland Express" and has a 351 in the back with a timber deck over the engine compartment. I'm almost positive it's the same boat with the same rego # 47150.
I could give you some recent history on it if anyone is interested

Deleteyes, that's the one! When I stopped ski-racing I put a 351 in it and made a teak timber rear cover.
Tell me more about its recent history.
G'day Garry. It currently resides in Katanning Western Australia. I first skied behind it about 20 ago at Lake Ewylemartup just 16kms east of Katanning. I can't remember the guy's name who owned it then but it will come back to me.
ReplyDeleteHe sold it to David Mills and together we would ski at 'Eywly' and Lake Towerining at Moodiarrup. I caught up with Dave a few weeks ago and we are organizing for a catch up at 'Moody' when the weather warms up and take my recently purchased Flightcraft Phantom.
The Clevland Express hasn't changed much over the years. Unfortunately David has a habit of fixing things the cheapest way possible. Nice guy, but tight. Ha! Part of the reason I was happy to off load it again. I loved the boat but wasn't very mechanically minded and didn't want to spend more time fixing it than skiing behind it.
It still has the 351 in it with a mild cam. The hull polishes up real nice and looks amazing in the sun.
I think most of the photos I have are on another computer. I will dig some out and post here.
What a coincidence. I was searching for history on the Flightcraft Phantom and I found this site. Couldn't believe it when I found the Clevland Express in it's former glory. After seeing the photos I'm half tempted to buy it again and restore it...maybe with a bit of extra bling on the back :)
Speaking of Flightcraft, I had my boat in Albany WA a few weeks ago at Emu Point and as I was pulling it out of the water this guy came up to me and asked "is that a Flightcraft Phantom?" and I said yeah. He asked if he could have a look at the ID plate. He checked it out and then said "I built this boat way back in 1972" (or 75. I'll have to double check). We chatted for a while and exchanged details. Unbelievable eh?
Small world aye! Great bit of detective work Graeme, rapt you found us and thanks so much for sharing with us the rest of her story so far. Would dearly love to see more recent pics if or when you ever get the chance ..and of course that Phantom of yours. Cheers Garry & Graeme.
